18 Nov The Sweet Side of the Points East Coastal Drive: A One-Day Hot Chocolate Trail Itinerary
Looking for a fun holiday activity to do on the weekend? Spend a day exploring the scenic communities of Eastern Prince Edward Island while sipping your way through some of the most creative hot chocolates around!
Morning
Start your morning in Belfast at Country Taste Kitchen and Bakery! This sweet, local bakery is serving a black cocoa + cherry hot chocolate topped with house-made almond marshmallow. Arrive early to grab some of their freshly baked goods for later; their most popular items can sell out fast! While you are in Belfast, be sure to visit Fleece and Harmony, which carries small-batch yarn made and hand-dyed at their mill.
Next, head down to The Deck of Ocean Acres in Murray Harbour. Their Chocolate a l’Orange is a nod to the traditional chocolate orange treat that we all know and love.
If you are visiting on December 5 & 6, you will be there during Christmas in the Villages – Down East PEI! Be sure to check out Murray Harbour Farmer’s Christmas Market for handmade gifts and local foods. If you don’t make it to Christmas in the Villages, many Christmas markets and craft fairs in Eastern PEI are happening all season long.
Afternoon
By lunchtime, make your way to 21 Breakwater Restaurant in Souris, a beautiful harbourfront spot. Grab a table overlooking the water and try their Salted Caramel Cocoa with your meal, made with caramel rum sauce, rich chocolate shavings, and a salted cinnamon-sugar rim. If you want to guarantee yourself a table, we recommend booking reservations in advance.

While you’re in Souris, take some time to explore this charming coastal town. Browse local shops like Artisans on Main for one-of-a-kind Island-made gifts. With over 25 Island artisans on Main Street who create visual arts, pottery, jewellery, textiles, woodwork, and much more, you will be sure to find a few Christmas gifts here! You can also take a peaceful stroll along the Souris Boardwalk and breathe in the salty air – the Souris beach is known for being a great spot to find seaglass!
If you prefer sports over shopping and markets, head to Kings Pine Disc Golf Park in Mount Stewart for a game and a scenic walk through the pines. Or, test your skills at Glenaladale Disc Golf, set on the historic Glenaladale Estate. Both courses along the Points East Coastal Drive are beautiful in any season and welcome players of all levels, snow or shine.
Keep the hot chocolate trail going at The Seagull Coastal Grab and Go! This cafe opened this year, and their S’mores Hot Chocolate gets points for creativity with its toasted marshmallow rim!
